FAQs about Invisible Retainers

Everything you need to know about post-orthodontic retainers

Why is a retainer necessary after orthodontics?

After completing orthodontic treatment, teeth tend to drift back towards their original position. The retainer keeps teeth in their new position while the supporting bone and tissues consolidate. Without a retainer, relapse is practically inevitable in the long term.

How are invisible retainers manufactured?

We start from the patient's intraoral scan (taken at the end of treatment), 3D-print the digital model, and thermoform the retainer over the model with biocompatible thermoplastic material. The result is a retainer perfectly adapted to the patient's current anatomy.

Are invisible retainers effective?

Yes. Thermoformed clear retainers are an effective option for the retention phase when the patient follows the wear schedule indicated by the practice. They have the advantage of being comfortable, hygienic, and discreet.

How long should a retainer be worn?

The standard protocol is nightly wear for life. During the first 6–12 months, daytime wear is also recommended. After this phase, continued nightly wear is sufficient to maintain results long-term. It is important to replace the retainer when wear or loss of retention is detected.
